Meet "Gabby" – A Guitar Legend Reborn for Collectors Choice
Imagine discovering an original 1959 Les Paul, owned by the same person since the day it was built, preserved in near-perfect condition. That’s “Gabby”—a guitar with a story so captivating it almost feels like a legend, yet it’s entirely real. Gabby’s journey from her original owner to the icon of the vintage world tells a tale of passion, tradition, and pure vintage magic.
The original owner of this pristine, beautifully flamed 1959 Les Paul decided it was time to reveal her true worth, and he didn’t entrust just anyone. He turned to Gibson, the very company that created her. While Gibson doesn’t appraise vintage guitars, they connected him with Vic DaPra, a renowned collector and vintage expert. Vic was captivated instantly: “Gibson referred the owner of ‘Gabby’ to me for an appraisal in March of 2008. As soon as I opened the photos sent ahead of the guitar, I knew I had to have it. It’s among the finest examples of an original 1959 ‘Burst that I’ve ever seen or owned,” he recalls.
Gabby, affectionately named after "The Gibson Appraisal ‘Burst," is one of the rarest finds in vintage guitar lore: flawless in condition, her original red finish still gleams with the rich Heritage Cherry Sunburst. Gabby quickly became a sensation among collectors, her pristine state and rarity spreading like wildfire. Eventually, Vic entrusted Gabby to Ronny Proler, another highly respected collector known for sharing his treasures with musicians worldwide. When Ronny played Gabby for the first time, he was thrilled: “Gabby has incredible flame, a unique feel, and that ‘early primitive’ tone we all dream about. Simply a stunning example of an original ‘Burst in every way,” he shared.
Now, Gibson has collaborated with Vic and Ronny to recreate this legendary guitar as Collector’s Choice #30: the 1959 Les Paul 9-0291, “Gabby.” Limited to up to 300 pieces, each crafted with breathtaking accuracy, this series captures every detail—from the meticulously replicated neck profile and body to the soulful tones of her vintage pickups. With a beautifully figured flame maple top and an authentic finish, this is more than a guitar; it’s a piece of rock history, ready to be played, collected, and admired.
